Spirit Energy, former subsidiary of Centrica Energy, are an exploration & production (E&P) company in the oil and gas industry. Headquartered in Barrow-In-Furness, Spirit own and operate a plethora of onshore and offshore assets across northern Europe. With over 30 years experience in Morecambe Bay in the UK, as well as 14 years operation experience in the North Sea off the coast of Norway, Spirit Energy has a strong portfolio of oil & gas assets in various stages of exploration, development, production and decommissioning.
We were contracted by Spirit Energy to revamp their safety induction process. Spirit wanted to be considered the ‘Google of the oil industry’, and asked for creativity in the new induction, with attention drawn specifically to the system by which the videos were delivered. The company hired us to create an innovative, engaging, cinematic series of videos that outlined the important safety procedures when on site. They felt their previous induction video was dated and found that most workers lost interest very quickly. Given the extreme risks involved in working at/in an oil and gas terminal, it was imperative that all visitors and workers were clear on the safety procedures.
We delivered a brand new digital interactive system comprised of 8 video chapters with multiple choice questions. This new system was completely digital and the first of its kind in the industry. The video above is the final chapter of the Onshore induction, showing what to do in an emergency.
For the induction, we developed an online system that was accessible both on and off site for workers to complete. The induction was split into modules, with questions at the end of each chapter. As viewers work their way through the induction, their answers are recorded and an email with their results is sent to relevant HSE managers upon completion.
WHAT WE DID FOR THE PROJECT
As part of the project, we completed the BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) and MIST (Minimum Industry Safety Training) qualifications providing us with the training to travel to any oil rig in the world.
The BOSIET course included, amongst other things, being dunked upside down underwater in a replica helicopter and being made to escape through a window.
We worked with Spirit to write the script for the induction, ensuring that it covered everything that was required, using the terminology that they employed. The script was the foundation for the whole induction and was one of the key stages in the preparation of the induction. It informed the creative decisions that we made in the project.
We hired in actors to deliver key scenes in the induction surrounding what to do in an emergency. This meant the induction didn’t feel staged and stiff; the actors were comfortable on camera and were able to complete the task in a way that looked genuine.
“McGill Productions were fantastic, they worked with us to develop an engaging way to communicate some key messages to our workforce in an impactful way. Very professional and creative service which delivered a world class product on time and in budget. I would happily work with them again.”
