LANCASTER CITY GYMNASTICS

GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME

Lancaster City Gymnastics approached McGill Productions with a clear challenge: create a gymnastics club video that could showcase the club's facilities, highlight its junior members, and attract more sign-ups in its younger age groups. Based at the City of Lancaster Gymnastics Centre on Lancaster Leisure Park, the club needed a video production partner who could turn that message into something emotional, clear, and commercially useful.

BRIEF

The goal was simple: show that gymnastics progress does not happen overnight, but that the club is the place where that journey begins. Lancaster City Gymnastics wanted a film that could promote the facility, reflect the club's credibility, and appeal to parents considering classes for younger children.

This was not just about filming skills and routines. The brief needed to connect emotionally, showing the journey from beginner to more experienced gymnast in a way that felt aspirational without losing authenticity.

01   //   PRE-PRODUCTION

McGill Productions started in pre-production by building the concept around a journey. The film was designed to show progression across different ages, using a sequence of young gymnasts to suggest how training develops over time. The club handled casting itself, selecting members who resembled each other so the story could feel like one continuous path from beginner to experienced gymnast.

What made the project distinct was the emotional tone built into the creative from the start. Music played a central role in shaping the pace and feel of the film, with an elegant orchestral track chosen before filming to create a sense of innocence and nostalgia. A shooting script and storyboard were then developed to keep the production clear and efficient.

02   //   PRODUCTION

Production took place over multiple days at the City of Lancaster Gymnastics Centre. McGill Productions filmed on RED Digital Cinema cameras to give the piece a cinematic quality, while keeping the shoot efficient enough to work around the club's scheduled classes and the children involved.

The footage combined staged scenes with material captured during scheduled classes, helping balance story-led filming with the reality of the club environment. Filming on RED Digital Cinema cameras in 4K at 120fps allowed key moments to be captured in slow motion, giving the final film a more graceful, emotive finish.

03  //   POST-PRODUCTION

In post-production, McGill Productions shaped the footage into a 92-second advert delivered in cinematic widescreen format, alongside a vertical version for Instagram. Editing, sound, colour, and final finishing were used to keep the piece polished while preserving the gentler emotional tone established in pre-production.

The Result

The final campaign gave Lancaster City Gymnastics a stronger way to present both the club and the journey it offers young members. By focusing on patience, development, and emotional progression rather than just performance, McGill Productions created a film that felt more human and more persuasive than a standard sports promo. The club released the video on 15 September 2018 and received 15 new clients within the first 12 hours, exactly the kind of proof a local membership-driven business needs from its launch content.

The work continues to serve as a benchmark for how McGill Productions approaches community sport and youth-focused promotional films, balancing aspiration with authenticity to drive measurable sign-ups for local clubs.
